Star-trekking to paranoia
I must admit I'm not a wild Star Trek fanatic, but I do like the latest series. Specially the theme song, which should have been adopted by Ally McBeal.
In Hong Kong we get Star World. I don't know how to compare this to anything else I've seen except to say that they occasionally interrupt adverts with programmes. Often the programmes are programmes they have run before but that doesn't stop them as touting them as "all new".
At some times you can still pick up Magnum PI and the A Team. Whoo hoo!
Now I don't know who does those deep-voiced American-accented promos for the trailer but sometimes the words are pretty amusing.
I was interested, though, to hear the one for the new seaons of Star Trek which promises the heroes will ... "travel to new worlds in search of those who would harm them".
What???
Has the yankee pechant for paranoia reached areas where no man has gone before?
Are they telling us new worlds, that don't even know us, wish to do us harm?
Who's writing this stuff, the White House spin doctors?
Thank god Captain Archer and T'Pol are there to save us.

Origin of the janissaries
Sultan Murat I of the fledgling Ottoman Empire founded the units around 1330. It was initially formed of Dhimmi (non-Muslims, originally exempted from
military service), especially Christian youths and prisoners-of-war, reminiscent of Mamelukes. Murat may have also used futuwa groups as a model.
The first Janissary units comprised war captives and slaves.
Eventually Mahmud II had to get rid of the janissaries, perhaps because he had to pay the high salaries of 135,000 janissaries, many of whom were not
actually serving soldiers.]
In 1826 the janissaries noticed that the Sultan was forming a new army. Some have suggested that the Sultan had incited them to revolt on purpose. On June
14 15 June 1826, the janissaries in Istanbul revolted but this time most of the army, and the population at large, turned against them. The Sipahis, the cavalry units loyal to the sultan, forced them to retreat to their barracks. Artillery fired 15 volleys into the barracks, causing massive casualties. Survivors were executed or banished and two years later Mahmud II confiscated the last janissary possessions. This event is now called The Auspicious Incident.

Cantonists in Russia
Cantonists were sons of Russian private soldiers who from 1805 were educated in special "canton schools"for future military service (the schools were called garrison schools in the 18th century); after 1827 the term was applied also to Jewish boys, who were drafted to military service at the age of twelve and placed for their military education in cantonist schools of distant provinces. Like other conscripts, they were forced to serve in the Russian army for 25 years or more, according to the law signed by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia on August 26 (September 7 new style), 1827. A disproportionate number of Jewish minors under 18 years of age, and sometimes much younger, were placed in such preparatory military training establishments. Even though boys as young as eight were frequently taken, the 25-year term officially commenced at the age of 18.
The vast majority of Jews entered the Russian Empire as an unwelcome side effect* of the territories acquired as a result of the Partitions of Poland of the 1790s; their civil rights were severely restricted (see Pale of Settlement) and most lacked knowledge of the official Russian** language.

Chinese military set to expand regional influence

WASHINGTON -- China is building up its military -- including nuclear missiles, ships and submarines -- with the apparent goal of expanding its power throughout Asia, senior military intelligence officials told Congress yesterday.
Gen. Michael Hayden, principal deputy director of national intelligence, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that "there's almost a momentum in Chinese thinking that ... great powers need certain things, and they aren't necessarily tied to a specific military event, either proposed or expected, but simply become the trappings of their global legitimacy."

fotog... while I appreciate your enthusiasm could you limit your postings to those that actually 1, deal with the topic and 2, make sense, otherwise I'll have to remove them, if I can figure out how.
